02 May From Tyler to the Frontlines: How Our Products Support U.S. Troops
At the East Texas Lighthouse, we often say that our products support our country and our military—but every now and then, we see that truth come to life in powerful ways.
Recently, a local U.S. soldier stationed in the Middle East texted a photo to his loved ones in Tyler. In his hands was a roll of paracord produced at our very own Horizon Industries facility, right here in East Texas. It was a simple snapshot, but it told a much bigger story—one of purpose, pride, and connection across continents.
That paracord, like thousands of others, was carefully spooled by employees who are blind or visually impaired. For many of them, this work isn’t just a job. It’s a way to contribute meaningfully, build independence, and create products that serve a greater mission. Knowing that something made with care in Tyler made its way into the hands of an American service member halfway around the world? That’s the kind of moment that reminds us why our work matters.
Horizon Industries: Where Purpose Meets Production
Horizon Industries is the manufacturing arm of the East Texas Lighthouse. As one of the nation’s largest employers of people who are blind, we provide meaningful work opportunities in a variety of roles, including the production of military-grade textiles and accessories.
Among the most recognizable products we create is paracord, a durable and versatile cord used in military, emergency, and outdoor settings. It’s deployed for securing gear, repairing equipment, and even life-saving situations. For our employees, every roll spooled represents not only a paycheck, but a tangible contribution to national defense and safety.
Each product shipped from our facility undergoes a rigorous quality control process, and each employee plays a vital role in that chain—from spooling and inspection to packaging and shipping.
More Than Just a Job
For the men and women who work at Horizon, many of whom lost their sight later in life or were born blind, this work represents more than financial stability. It’s a pathway to independence, community, and pride.
When the photo of that soldier holding our paracord came through, many of our team members felt an overwhelming sense of connection. One employee said, “I always knew our work mattered, but seeing it in the hands of someone serving our country—that hit home.”
A Piece of Tyler, Supporting the World
We may be based in Tyler, Texas, but the impact of our work knows no borders. Whether it’s supporting soldiers overseas, outfitting government agencies, or helping a camper feel more confident at Camp Lighthouse, the East Texas Lighthouse continues to shine a light in places near and far.
As we continue this mission, we’re reminded that independence, dignity, and purpose are not just ideals—they’re outcomes we help create every day.
Want to support this mission? Every donation, every hour volunteered, and every product purchased helps empower individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Together, we’re not just making products—we’re making a difference.
