Initially focused on providing employment opportunities, the organization achieved a significant milestone with the creation of a manufacturing facility which still serves as the largest employer of those who are blind in East Texas. This not only empowered individuals by offering valuable and meaningful work, but also created a sustainable funding model by providing essential goods to the military and federal government.

As the East Texas Lighthouse expanded, so did its commitment to empowerment. In 2010, the establishment of the Client Services division marked a groundbreaking shift towards comprehensive rehabilitation, education, training and employment. Pioneering a vocational rehabilitation center and low vision store, it became the first of its kind in the area, offering Assistive Technology, Orientation and Mobility training, Independent Living training, Children’s programs and scholarships.

Adapting to the evolving needs of the visually impaired community, the organization embraced technological advancements. Cutting-edge tools and adaptive technologies were incorporated to enhance accessibility and independence, aligning with the mission to empower individuals with the skills needed for modern, computer-based careers.

Robust Education Program Empowers Texans and Beyond

A pivotal collaboration in 2018 with the National Industries for the Blind led to the expansion of a Microsoft Office computer training program. Originally intended as an in-person class, the ProMOTE program swiftly transitioned to a virtual setting in 2020, demonstrating the organization’s adaptability in the face of challenges.

Building on this success, East Texas Lighthouse introduced an entry-level Microsoft Office course (MOBI) and an Assistive Technology Instructor course (ATIP). MOBI caters to beginner-level computer users seeking advancement in technology skills, while ATIP equips individuals to instruct and assist others in using assistive technology.

Community engagement has been a constant throughout the organization’s history, with events, professional development programs, workshops, summer camps, college prep initiatives, scholarships and support groups creating a robust network of support for individuals and their families.

Today, the East Texas Lighthouse stands as a shining example of positive change. Its history is a reminder of the transformative impact a dedicated community can have, creating a future where everyone, regardless of visual abilities, can thrive and contribute to a diverse and inclusive society. After almost 50 years, the East Texas Lighthouse has become not only a local employment provider for those who are blind but a hub for essential training and professional development on a national and international scale. Serving blind and visually impaired clients in over 20 states and three countries, the organization’s impact resonates far beyond its Texas roots.
