Easter Egg Hunt

The Easter Egg Hunt is an opportunity for local blind and visually impaired children to experience a standard Easter Egg Hunt in a setting that is best for them and their vision. The event features a beeping egg hunt, standard egg hunt, and non-mobile egg hunt along with games and special guests. Easter baskets are provided for registered students. This event is a partnership between Region 7, 8, HHSC and The Lighthouse.

Disability Services Awareness

Disability Services Awareness is an opportunity for blind and visually impaired high school students to visit a university and learn about disability services available at the college level. They will lean how these services differ from services they receive at their high school.

Christmas Outing

The Christmas Outing is an opportunity for local blind and visually impaired children to experience the gift of giving. Students receive money to shop for a child of any age or gender. The toys are then donated to TOYS FOR TOTS at The Lighthouse Annual Christmas Banquet. Students also visit the mall for lunch, games and socialization. The event is open to school age children. Lunch is provided. The event is a partnership between Region 7, 8, HHSC and The Lighthouse.

White Cane Day Walk

The White Cane Day Walk is an annual event honoring the importance of the white cane and the independence it gives to those who use them. The National Day of observance is October 15th, while the organizations event varies slightly following business operating hours. The event features a walk through downtown Tyler that departs and returns to Horizon Industries, 500 N. Bois D’Arc Tyler, TX 75702. The walk is open to the public.

Career Exploration

An opportunity for blind and visually impaired Jr. High and High School students to explore career opportunities as well as the education and training necessary to follow that career path.

Careers on the Horizon

Careers on the Horizon is an opportunity for blind and visually impaired high school students to experience work place occupations through job shadowing and mentoring. The first year, students spend one day, once a month for five months, job shadowing in a different department each month. If selected for a second year, students choose one area and are assigned a mentor for the entire five months. Department assignments include, Production and Quality, Information Technology, Customer Service, Human Resources, Independent Living, Assistive Technology, and Employment Services upon availability. Lunch is provided.
